Question by Big C: Is bankruptcy a good option if I?m deep in debt? Or is credit counseling a better option?
I Owe roughly $ 30k in credit card debt and I?m not sure which path to take.

Try the credit counseling first. I filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy years ago ? it IS a big deal and devastating to your life. It doesn?t JUST ruin your credit ? ruins your ability to get employment in some places, ruins your ability to get into decent housing?. I don?t even think Chapter 7 is available anymore (wipes out all of your debt ? poof). I think now the court requires Chapter 13 where you work out a way to make payments to the creditors. Katy Perry's 'Wide Awake' Video: Through The Looking Glass

Perry's fairy-tale clip closes the book on her Teenage Dream story and finds her living happily ever after.

Katy Perry certainly isn't the first artist to get all Lewis Carroll-ian with a video — Tom Petty's iconic "Don't Come Around Here No More" certainly springs to mind — though, in some ways, her brand-new "Wide Awake" clip (which borrows from Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass" book) does manage to cover new territory — namely by transforming the fantasy trope into a bit of an autobiography.

It makes sense. After all, it's not exactly a stretch to call the past two years of her life — which began with the release of her Teenage Dream album in summer 2010 and concludes with her upcoming "Part of Me" 3-D film — surreal. She's one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, gone through a very public divorce, and become the rather unwilling target of the tabloids — and in some way, you get the feeling she'd like nothing more than to return to simpler times (singles sales intact, obvs). And all those things show up, in one form or another, in "Wide Awake," which begins at the very end of her "California Gurls" music video shoot and takes her literally through the looking glass to a world that is basically as fantastical as her actual existence.

She is trapped inside a labyrinth. She discovers her lost innocence in the form of a young girl. She is hounded by hellish paparazzi. She finds her Prince Charming, who tellingly crosses his fingers behind his back before going in for a kiss. And even more tellingly, Perry reaches back and decks him. In short, you don't exactly need an advanced degree in film theory to realize that the video is one long symbolic ride through her voyage to superstardom (except for the two hospital attendants/minotaurs; I'm not sure what they represent). The squeeze of fame, the rose-colored nostalgia, the invasions of privacy and the betrayals of trust: It's all here and all ready for the armchair analysts.

Of course, Perry has made it very clear that this new video is the final chapter of the fairy tale that was her Teenage Dream years. That she doesn't seem to be entirely happy with all of it is about as telling as her socking Prince Charming — after all, no one ever said fame was easy, or the ride to the top wouldn't be a bumpy one. And, at their very core, most fairy tales are actually pretty terrifying things. But with "Wide Awake," Perry lets it be known that she's made it through unscathed and on top of the world. And if that's not a happy ending, well, then I don't know what is.

Former Boynton Beach mayor pleads not guilty to new corruption charge

Former Boynton Beach Mayor Jose Rodriguez, through his attorney, pleaded not guilty on Monday to a fourth corruption charge added to three charges he already faces.

The new criminal charge, filed by the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office on Thursday, accuses Rodriguez of misusing his official position to attempt to benefit himself in violation of Florida statutes and Palm Beach County's Code of Ethics.

Rodriguez is the first person to be charged under the county's Code of Ethics statute. His attorney, Jason Weiss, who was out of town when the charge was filed, asked the judge for more time to review it.

"Being the guinea pig for the statute, we're going to need to look into it and see what needs to be challenged regarding that particular charge," Weiss said after Monday's hearing.

Weiss also entered a motion requesting more information about the state's second charge, which accuses Rodriguez of solicitation to commit unlawful disclosure of confidential criminal information.

Weiss told Palm Beach Conty Circuit Court Judge Charles Burton that the prosecution had insufficiently explained what confidential criminal information Rodriguez allegedly solicited.

"I want to know what info they claim he was seeking," he said.

Burton granted Weiss' request, giving the state 10 days to clarify the second charge.

"That is the essence of the crime," Burton said of the information Rodriguez allegedly solicited. "So if the detective can't tell him what it is, somebody ought to tell him."

Rodriguez is also charged with accepting unlawful compensation for official behavior as mayor and with resisting arrest without violence.

The bulk of the charges were filed against Rodriguez on Jan. 26, and were in reference to Rodriguez's alleged attempts to interfere with investigations into claims made by his estranged wife, Sarah Marquez.

According to Rodriguez's arrest report, Marquez contacted Boyton Beach Police Chief Matt Immler on Aug. 8, and told him she feared for the safety of herself and her daughter, who is Rodriguez's stepdaughter. In a recorded interview, Marquez told two Boyton Beach police officers that Rodriguez and his son had hit her daughter, according to the report.

Rodriguez later became the subject of investigations by the Boynton Beach Police Department and the Department on Children and Families, although the initial investigation was closed less than a month later, a DCF investigation was closed because Marquez was uncooperative, according to the report.

Immler said in a sworn and recorded interview that on Nov. 16, Rodriguez called Immler at his work phone and asked why police detectives were trying to contact his wife but hung up before Immler could finish his response.

The next day, Immler said, Rodriguez called him on his work cellphone and "invoked his status as the mayor and told the chief to stop pursuing the criminal investigation and to stop trying to contact his wife," according to the arrest report.

Interim City Manager Lori LaVerriere said in a sworn and recorded interview that on Dec. 1 she had a two-hour meeting with Rodriguez at his request. Rodriguez, she said, told LaVerriere that he had "problems" with her performance and needed her to ask more questions of the police.

According to the arrest report, Rodriguez had a list of questions about the then-active investigation into him but did not want to ask the questions directly.

Later that day, LaVerriere said, Rodriguez told her in a vacant office, "It is your job to protect the mayor and [city] commission, and I'm not feeling protected." He offered "protection" to LaVerriere "in return" for her "protection" of him, according to the arrest report.

On Jan. 26, Rodriguez surrendered to the Palm Beach Sherriff's Office and was later released on bail. The following day, Gov. Rick Scott issued an executive order suspending the mayor from office without pay.

Marquez, in a phone call late Monday, denied that she told Immler that she feared for her safety. She also denied that she was uncooperative with any investigations regarding this incident.

Rodriguez's trial remains set to start July 27.

Assistant State Attorney Daniel Funk declined to comment on the case when reached on Monday.
