A 1944 Electromagnetic Radiation Poster Makes Learning Retro Chic

A 1944 Electromagnetic Radiation Poster Makes Learning Retro Chic

There are lots of interactions and fields around us all the time that we can't see. Like gravity. We can always count on gravity to be there when we trip and face plant. And we interact with all different frequencies on the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation every day, which is usually fine and sometimes deadly. And you might be feeling good about all this physical awareness, but don't. People have known about this stuff for a long time and they've been making unbelievably detailed infographics about it for at least 70 years.

Clarke on NCAA pre-season freshman team

Published: August 01, 2013 2:00 PM
Updated: August 01, 2013 3:41 PM

Summer Clarke has received her first honour as an National Collegiate Athletic Association athlete?and her college soccer career hasn?t even kicked off yet.

The 18-year-old Richmond soccer sensation, who will begin pre-season training with the Louisiana State University Tigers Aug. 6, is one of 11 rookies nationwide selected to the Pre-season All-Freshman Team.

The Tigers are the No. 1-ranked team in the Southeast Conference and No. 13 in the NCAA for 2013.

?During the evaluation process, our staff rated Summer the top striker in North America for the Class of 2013,? said LSU head coach Brian Lee.

Clarke, who most recently led the Vancouver Whitecaps girls? elite team to the Gothia Cup title in the under-19 division on July 20 in Gothenburg, Sweden, has developed into one of the world?s most feared strikers at the youth level with her experience in the Canadian women?s national team system at the under-17 and under-20 levels. She was the leading scorer for the U-17 Canadian team during the 2012 season, which included setting a national record with six goals with her effort at the 2012 Confederation of North, Central American & Caribbean Association Football Women?s Under-17 Championships en route to Canada?s berth in the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women?s World Cup.

Clarke started three of four matches during the FIFA U-17 Women?s World Cup in Azerbaijan a year ago, scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 shutout of Columbia.

Calendar-Based Personal Finance App Dollarbird Flies Into First ...

The beautiful and, more importantly, useful personal finance app Dollarbird has received its first update, a couple of weeks after its launch on iOS.

Essentially, Dollarbird is a smart calendar for tracking and forecasting your finances. Using a simple calendar-based interface, the app makes it easy for you to enter your past or future income and expenses and see what you spend your money on.

The app?s first update ensures that you and you alone can see your personal finance activity as it adds the ability to protect your data with a PIN code. Just go to the app?s settings section, enable PIN code protection, and set your PIN. Be careful not to forget your PIN, though, since that will mean locking yourself out of the app and losing all of your data.

But just to be sure, you might want to back up your data elsewhere. And to help you do that, the update offers the option to export your data in CSV format. Again, go to the settings section and tap the ?Export data in CSV? option to create an email with the resulting CSV already attached.

If you can?t see the video embedded above, please click here.

Dollarbird?s first update also adds the ability to edit and delete the default categories. Just tap and hold on any category to rename it, change its icon, or trash it.

Also including enhancements on reminders and local notifications along with other improvements, the new version of Dollarbird is available now in the App Store as a free update or as a new $1.99 download. The app is optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 6.0 or later.

Russia asks for arrest of real estate businessman Polonsky

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian law enforcement officials on Friday sought the arrest of real estate businessman Sergei Polonsky, believed to be in Israel, to face trial over fraud charges.

The country's interior ministry asked a court to put Polonsky under arrest in absentia and requested that a procedure to extradite him should begin, a statement posted on the ministry's website said on Friday.

According to an interior ministry press release in June, Polonsky was charged in absentia with fraud relating to a property firm he founded which is accused of stealing more than 5.7 billion roubles ($172 million) from people who had prepaid for flats in a residential housing complex it was building.

"The investigative department of the Interior Ministry of Russia initiated a petition before the court in respect of ... Sergei Polonsky, who is accused of committing ... fraud ... to detain him, in absentia," the statement said.

"If the court approves the investigator's request, the process will start to extradite Polonsky to Russia."

Polonsky, worth $1.2 billion before the global financial crisis, was at the center of the recent case against media magnate Alexander Lebedev, who was charged with hooliganism for throwing a punch at Polonsky on a television show. The case, brought by Russia's investigative committee, saw Lebedev avoid a jail sentence but be ordered to do 150 hours of community service.

Polonsky has a visa to stay in Israel until September 27, the statement said, citing law enforcement authorities in Israel. It added Israeli authorities had asked Russia to inform them about its intentions in respect to Polonsky.

Earlier in the year, Polonsky was detained in Cambodia accused of assault and illegal detention after an incident on a boat, according to authorities in the country at the time. He was later freed.

A statement on a Facebook account which appears to be Sergei Polonsky's press office, said that Polonsky was disappointed with the decision by the interior ministry, and that he insisted on an objective investigation. He is ready to cooperate fully with investigators, the statement said.

Polonksy's lawyer Alexander Dobrovinsky was not immediately available for comment.

John Carmack says Armadillo Aerospace is in 'hibernation'

Armadillo Aerospace was once at the forefront of efforts to foster private spaceflight, but it has been quiet ever since its STIG-B rocket crashed in January. We're now learning why: founder John Carmack has revealed that the company is now in "hibernation." The transition from contract work to vehicle building just didn't pan out, he says. Having more full-time staff backfired, as workers were bogged down in planning and reviews; the team also repeated many of NASA's mistakes in material choices, limiting its production capacity. As Carmack isn't prepared to invest more of his personal funds to keep Armadillo going, the firm will likely remain on ice until there's a new investor who's ready to pay to keep up with Branson and Musk in the space race.

The battle for wild card berths in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup is heating up among Jeff Gordon, Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch - NASCAR News | FOX Sports on MSN

Updated?Aug 2, 2013 12:11 PM ET

?

This weekend at Pocono will be the six-week mark until the 2013 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup field is set. In just six short weeks I believe we are going to see some big names make it into the Chase field, but to me the bigger story will be the names that don?t make it.

I think you would be foolish to discount the possibility of Jeff Gordon making the Chase. He?s obviously got Hendrick power plants and he runs well at Pocono. Plus, it seems like the No. 24 bunch as a whole is getting more and more consistent. He could be one of the oddities as this Chase wild card situation is evolving. I actually can see a scenario where he can be consistent enough to actually hop over some guys and make the Chase field without a win during the regular season.

He is the only guy right now that I believe can do that right at the moment. I know at one time Kurt Busch had all the consistency in the world going his way and looked poised to make the Chase via being in the top 10 in points. Unfortunately, I think they?ve reached their high-water mark on that front, and if he wants to be in the Chase, he?s going to have to win a race plus put good numbers up on the board to make it happen for the No. 78 car.

You can say the same thing about people like Joey Logano. It?s going to take a win or multiple wins very, very quickly for them to make this 2013 Chase. I simply don?t see anyone else out there other than Gordon that has the consistency to affect the wild card picture by pushing a Kasey Kahne or even a Greg Biffle out with the one win.

This weekend is one more piece of that puzzle as the Chase field picture becomes clearer, and it definitely is an exciting scenario. It?s hard to believe I keep having to say this, but our defending series champion, Brad Keselowski, is in that same group. He?s going to have to win for a chance to be in. It?s just that simple and almost a given at this point for the No. 2 car.

There are just too many guys with the one win that will wind up outside the top 10. It really is going to come down to the wire between two or three teams about how this is all going to play out. Depending on how they are running, I can see where it can affect strategy in a couple different ways.

With the one win in your pocket, do you go for broke on, say, a fuel call deep into the race and try to secure that elusive second win? Or do you simply play it safe, go for the good points day and hope that one win still will be enough to get you into the Chase?

Richmond is coming at us fast. It?s the last race of the regular season, and after that checkered flag, the 2013 Chase field will be set. So it?s going to be really, really interesting to see who puts it all out there versus who plays it safe just to get the points. Risk versus reward is what you are going to be hearing about. You actually might see some players forced to change their strategy as the clock ticks toward Richmond.

We know the good teams will still run well. The real unknown is who is going to step up and surprise us within the next six weeks. I am waiting to see who comes out of the woodwork and mounts a last-minute charge. Whoever that is could upset a lot of 2013 Chase apple carts in the process. It sure is going to be exciting to watch!

Jupiter's moon Europa: Send a submarine to explore it?

Jupiter's moon Europa is a icy shell with an underground ocean. The new movie 'Europa Report' is based on real science, and NASA ideas about how to explore Jupiter's fourth largest moon.

By Miriam Kramer,?Space.com / August 3, 2013

With a cold ocean under an icy shell, some have theorized that Europa is the most likely place to find life in the solar system.

Scientists have long been intrigued by Jupiter's fourth largest moon with its underground ocean and icy shell. Researchers have said that Europa's saltwater ocean could harbor life, and some have theorized that it is the most likely place to find life in the solar system.

"[Europa] is one of the premier places to search for living life, that is, life that's alive today, life that we can poke and prod at and ask this fundamental question of what makes it tick," said Kevin Hand, the deputy chief scientist of solar system exploration at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "Is its fundamental biochemistry the same as that on Earth or is it different? Is the origin of life easy or hard? There are all questions that Europa could potentially answer." [See Photos of Europa, An Icy Moon of Jupiter]

Unmanned robotic landers, deep space probes and even manned missions could help researchers answer some of those outstanding questions.

Scientists know that Europa is covered in a shell of ice, and data suggest that an ocean of liquid water also lurks below the surface. Some hope to send a submersible with the ability to dive beneath the ice to explore Europa's salty interior.

Building a submersible

In 2011, NASA awarded Stone Aerospace $4 million to continue the development of its "cryobot" project designed to autonomously explore the ocean of the moon.

"When we speak of the Europa mission at our shop we are talking about going for the gold ring: landing on the surface of Europa; sending a nuclear-powered cryobot carrier vehicle through the ice crust; discharging a nuclear-powered 'fast mover' autonomous underwater carrier vehicle that has planet-scale range, and selectively launching a series of miniaturized, highly intelligent AUVs [Autonomous Underwater Vehicles] to go into the more dangerous areas (e.g. around black smokers, up into ice cracks, into corrosive chemical plumes) to search for and collect biological samples and bring them back to the mother ship," Stone Aerospace CEO Bill Stone wrote told SPACE.com in an email.

Ideally, the robotic instruments included with the lander would come equipped with life-detecting instrumentation. [6 Most Likely Places for Alien Life in the Solar System]

Scientists are getting closer to developing viable versions of these scientific instruments that could travel to Europa, Stone said.

"The U.S. science community is today, thanks to NASA funding, on the verge of having available portable molecular DNA sequencers that could allow a Europa AUV to characterize life found on Europa at the microbial scale and then to return to the cryobot and uplink the information to the lander and back to Earth," Stone said.

Flybys and remote sensing

Scientists can also learn about Europa through remote sensing, using spacecraft flybys of the moon like NASA's Galileo spacecraft did after it arrived at Jupiter in 1995.

"There's a vast array of things you can learn from satellite observations of a planet," said Jeffrey Plaut, a NASA scientist at JPL. "If you're talking about Europa specifically, the science objectives have been laid out pretty clearly over the years for various space-born observations of Europa. Some very fundamental things like: How thick is the ice shell? Where is the ocean?"

Review: Motorola's Moto X Smartphone | MIT Technology Review

Motorola?s Moto X Smartphone

Wake up: The device shows alerts when turned over.

Google-owned Motorola unveiled the Moto X, its new flagship smartphone, in New York City today. The Moto X de?mphasizes manual control, hardware buttons, and the touch screen in favor of always-on sensors built to respond to speech, gestures, and context. And customers will be able to customize many features of the device when they order it.

The phone?s ?touchless control? interface is its biggest innovation. Without switching on the device, simply saying ?Okay Google Now? followed by a command can make a phone place a call, get directions, perform a Google search, or more. The phone?s accelerometer can also tell whether you?re in a moving car and tailor its commands and notifications accordingly.

Since it could be a huge drain on battery life to have sensitive sensors running around the clock, Motorola added two additional tiny processors to the Snapdragon S4 Pro system-on-a-chip. One is for natural language processing, and the other is for ?contextual computing? (in other words, managing all the phone?s other sensors). Both processors are built for extremely low-power use. Motorola designed the processors themselves; they are not built on the ARM architecture, and the company will not disclose who?s fabricating them. But it?s these chips that make all of the new button-free interfaces possible, while still allowing up to 24 hours of mixed usage and 13 hours of talk time.

The new chips also make other ?contextual computing? possible without requiring the user to touch a button or screen. Turn the phone face up, and it displays the time and notifications. No buttons pressed, no power-draining backlight turned on: the LED display only lights up the pixels needed to show the time. Motorola calls this an ?active display.? If you hold the phone up and twist your wrist, this activates the phone?s camera, reducing the time between pocket and portrait to two seconds. The Moto X comes with a 10-megapixel camera and 50 gigabytes of Google Drive storage, free for two years.

Observers have been waiting for the phone for two years, since Google announced it was buying Motorola Mobility. Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside calls the Moto X ?the first phone designed from scratch? post-acquisition. On quarterly earnings calls, Google CEO Larry Page has promised revolutionary new devices that would solve the problems of durability and battery life that still plague smartphones (see ?What New Ideas Does Google Have Brewing at Motorola??) once Motorola?s existing product pipeline cleared (see ?Motorola Shows Off First Smartphones Under Google?). Since then, Motorola?s ?X Phone? has been rumored, teased, leaked, and marketed for months.

colors available for Moto X

Color scheme: The Moto X will be offered in a variety of colors and materials.

As expected, the Moto X has a 4.7-inch Gorilla Glass screen that runs nearly edge-to-edge across the phone?s face, and a plump, rounded back that accommodates its custom-shaped battery and fits in the hand more like a mouse than the flat slate popular in today?s smartphones.

Motorola is touting the phone?s customizable colors and features, and the fact that it will be available on every major carrier in the U.S. and many more worldwide by late August or early September. The phone is also being assembled in Fort Worth, Texas, which makes it possible for U.S. customers to get a customized device in four days.

At Thursday?s event, Motorola?s senior vice president Rick Osterloh presented this phone as the culmination of Motorola?s 40 years of work on mobile communications. Citing smartphone makers? ?lack of innovation? and ?lack of imagination,? Osterloh said that the team assigned to develop the Moto X discovered that ?smart phones weren?t very smart??a direct echo of what Steve Jobs said before presenting the first iPhone.

In fact, relatively few features of the Moto X haven?t already been incorporated in Motorola?s Droid line of smartphones for Verizon, which deflates their impact. And because of the X?s long gestation, many of the wilder rumors about the phone turned out to be hot air. But it is still a milestone device and, if it?s successful, it could change the smartphone industry?s status quo.

Customization could be a big selling point of the Moto X in the United States. ?Cars let you customize the interior or exterior,? said Osterloh, ?but with phones, which are probably our most personal technology or object, you get to choose between black, white, and maybe silver.? The Moto X comes in 18 back and seven accent colors, as well as a white or black front.

Initially, however, this level of customization is only for customers in the U.S. on AT&T?s network. Most of the world gets to choose between textured white or textured black. Motorola says other carriers will be added to the Moto Maker customization program later in the year.

It?ll be possible to tailor a device at the AT&T store or online at motomaker.com. Most of the backs are either a smooth or textured polycarbonate, but Motorola is also experimenting with wooden backs. Although this won?t be available at launch, Motorola showed off finishes in bamboo, teak, ebony, and rosewood at the New York event.

Because the devices are assembled in the U.S., Motorola can configure and ship them in any customization within four days. If you?re unhappy with your custom phone, within 14 days you can ask for a return, and Motorola will ship you a new device with a prepaid FedEx box to return the old one.

?Every selection on the Moto Maker website checks the part?s availability in real-time,? said John Renaldi, the director of Moto Maker. ?Every one of our manufacturing lines can immediately switch to become a customized line,? depending on the distribution of orders.

Motorola?s goal, said Renaldi, was to export this on-the-fly customization ability to its factories all over the world. For now, Fort Worth?s proximity to Motorola?s design centers in Chicago and California make it Moto?s perfect pilot factory.

Forrester analyst Charles Golvin said that Motorola?s emphasis on customization speaks to the saturation of the current smartphone market, and was surprised that Motorola priced the Moto X at $199 on a two-year contract, given its goal of making ?a phone for everybody? and the difficulty of competing with the iPhone and other top smartphones at that price.

The most lasting impact of the Moto X will be beneath the surface. Local, just-in-time assembly may shift how and where many electronics are manufactured and make customization more common. Phone makers are also looking to larger possibilities for speech, proximity, and motion sensing, and beefing up their processor designs accordingly. Whether the Moto X is Motorola?s iPhone moment or not, it shows where mobile computing is headed.

Stocks close on highs as markets await crucial jobs figures

stocks

Stocks soared to fresh closing highs on Thursday, one day before the government releases critical jobs figures that could help determine whether the economy is healthy enough for the Federal Reserve to begin to slow down its stimulus package.

The rally, in which the S&P 500 went through the 1,700-point level for the first time, was sparked by a plethora of upbeat economic data ahead of the widely-watched jobs report set for Friday morning.

Analysts polled by Reuters expect to see a gain of 184,000 jobs in July, after a 195,000 uptick in the previous month.?

(Read more:?July jobs report key to Fed action)

"The jobs numbers have been decent as of late, but the problem is the quality of employment," said Lance Roberts, chief economist at StreetTalk Advisors. "There's also clearly a divergence between the stock market and real economy and that's because of the artificial stimulus from the Fed.

"The problem is that they're not seeing that stimulus being translated into the economy so the worry we should have is that we're inflating valuations and the issue of potentially blowing an asset bubble is very real."

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve?declined to signal when it would start tapering its bond-buying program, which has buoyed the markets. However, it did raise concerns about rising mortgage rates and flagged the risks of inflation falling too far below its target. In addition, the central bank slightly downgraded its outlook for economic growth.

But several reports on Thursday boosted the views of many analysts that the economy is getting healthier. Weekly jobless claims?dropped to a 5-1/2 year low, according to the Labor Department. And the number of planned layoffs at U.S. firms?declined modestly in July, with employers announcing 37,701 cuts last month, down 4.2 percent from June, according to the report from consultants Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

In another positive sign, the pace of growth in the U.S. manufacturing sector accelerated in July to the?highest level since June 2011 as new orders surged, according to the Institute for Supply Management.?

The positive economic data have stimulated the stock markets recently. Major stock averages closed out their?best July since 2010 on Wednesday and so far this year, the Dow and S&P 500 have spiked more than 19 percent, while the Nasdaq has surged an impressive 21 percent.

On Thursday, the?Dow Jones Industrial Average spiked to close 128 points higher and set a fresh all-time high of 15,650.69, lifted by Bank of America and P&G. ExxonMobil was among the few Dow components in the red.

The?S&P 500 and the?Nasdaq both put on 1 percent, with the S&P 500 piercing the 1700 barrier to close at 1706.87. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, slid below 13.

All key S&P sectors closed in positive territory, led by financials and industrials.

"The rising asset prices will help instill confidence and that will breed more confidence," said Matthew Kaufler, portfolio manager of the Clover Value Fund at Federated.?

"However, we've had a great run in the market and at some point there will be a correction in the near point?still, my sense would be that there's enough momentum that we'll end the year up a few percentage points higher than where we currently are."

(Read more:Short the S&P atall-time highs? Absolutely!)

Asian stocks rallied after China's official PMI (purchasing manager's index) data showed the country's manufacturing sector continued to expand in July, defying forecasts of a contraction. But the picture was mixed, with a private gauge of factory activity by HSBC showing an 11-month low of 47.7 in July. Japan's Nikkei rallied to a one-month peak on the news, the Shanghai Composite hit a one-week high and South Korea's Kospi touched a seven-week high.

"Official PMI is more skewed to larger companies, and the HSBC figure reflects the smaller companies and that is where you get this divergence," said Frederic Neumann, co-head of Asian economics research at HSBC.

(Read more: Will China PMI mark the end of negative data surprises?)

In Europe, the European Central Bank kept its main interest rate unchanged at a record low of 0.5 percent, and reiterated that rates would remain at present or lower levels for an extended period of time.

"Labor market conditions remain weak. Looking ahead to the remainder of the year and 2014, euro area growth should benefit from a gradual recovery in global demand," said ECB president Mario Draghi in a press conference following the announcement. "Our monetary policy stance remains accommodative for as long as necessary. We have unanimously confirmed the forward guidance we gave last time."

Euro zone manufacturing activity grew for the first time in two years in July, with the purchasing manager's index (PMI) climbing to 50.3 in July. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion.

And the Bank of England left its interest rates unchanged at 0.5 percent, as expected, under its new governor, Mark Carney.

ORGANISERS of the Queensland Outdoor Adventure and Motoring Expo are expecting bumper crowds to attend over the course of the three-day event.

The expo, which is in its 15th year, starts today at the Toowoomba Showgrounds.

Australian Events director Bob Carroll said he was amazed at how quickly the expo had evolved over the past decade.

"It is a hugely popular event," Mr Carroll said.

"It initially started off as a motoring expo and grew rapidly from there.

"It is by far one of our largest evolving expos," he said.

Mr Carroll said there would be more than 140 exhibitors on show at the expo.

"There are more stock and more variety this year," he said.

"It always surprises me. Just when I thought they could not come up with anything else, they do.

"There will be everything you can imagine in relation to outdoor and camping on show at the expo."

Mr Carroll said the outdoor adventure and camping sector had become a big money spinner.

"It is big business these days," he said.

"At our expo last week, a $200,000 campervan was sold off the floor within an hour of the gates opening.

"People these days know what they want."

Mr Carroll believes the expo will inject a significant amount of money into the Toowoomba economy.

"I know people who are coming from New South Wales to be here this weekend," he said.

"Some people even incorporate expo dates into their travelling itinerary."

or your clients' ? fitness progress - Precision Nutrition

Medications are powerful things. They can actually change your body?s response to a nutrition and exercise program. Here are the common ones to look out for.

Whenever we take on new clients in our Precision Nutrition coaching programs, we ask them about the medications they take, either regularly or occasionally.

This isn?t just a getting-to-know you game (although we do try to tailor each client?s program for their unique needs).

We ask because some medications may, in fact, prevent you from losing fat, gaining muscle, and/or improving your athletic performance.

In this article, we?ll give you a brief overview of the most common medications our clients are taking when they come to Precision Nutrition.

We?ll also share some of the potential side effects these medications can produce.

The pharmaceutical society

We?ve seen incredible advances in medicine and pharmacology in the last century.

The upside: In industrialized countries, we?re living longer and generally better.

We?re no longer killed or debilitated by common, curable diseases or nutritional deficiencies.

And we can alleviate many everyday complaints, such as aches and pains, upset stomach, or allergies.

The downside: We often end up taking a lot of medications to do this.

Most of us take at least one or two medications occasionally. But more and more of us are taking more and more medications chronically.

Our clients and their prescription habits

Many of our clients take some form of medication regularly when they start coaching with us.

Because women take more hormones (especially for birth control) as well as experience autoimmune diseases, migraines, anxiety, and depression more than men, female clients are more likely than men to take medication.

Over half of our female clients are on something, and often a lot of somethings. We?ve seen female clients taking ten or more medications simultaneously.

(Don?t feel too smug, gentlemen. More than one-third of you take medications too. We know you?re popping plenty of pills for your cholesterol, high blood pressure, and upset stomachs.)

Why does medication use matter?

When you think about losing fat and gaining muscle, you might not think about the role that your medications play in getting results.

But in fact, your medication might be affecting ? even actively hampering ? your progress.

Here, we?ll look at some of the more common medications, and what effects they can have on your nutrition, fitness, and overall wellness.

At the end of this article, we?ll give you some suggestions about what to do next.

Important notes

First, three important cautions.

1. We do NOT recommend that you simply quit taking any suspect medications.?Always?discuss any changes in medication with your doctor and/or pharmacist.

2. We?re NOT saying ?medications always bad, pharma-free living always good?.?We know that for many folks, medications can mean the difference between a good ? or functional ? day and a horrible day. If you?re on medications, you probably have some well-founded concerns about your health. We?re simply offering some information that you may not have considered in making your decisions about whether to take a particular drug.

3. We do NOT cover all the potential side effects of a given medication. These side effects are just those relevant to people who are looking to lose fat, gain muscle, and/or improve their athletic performance.

What did we look at?

Medication notes

ADHD: These are typically stimulants.

Allergy/asthma: We divided these up into 3 separate categories because they work differently: antihistamines (which block histamine release), beta-agonists (which act on adrenergic receptors of the beta type, in this case typically ?ramping up? heart rate and sympathetic nervous system function), and corticosteroids (which ?dampen down? inflammation).

Hyperlipidemia: These types of drugs are often prescribed along with statin drugs to lower cholesterol/lipids.

Insulin/glucose management: These are drugs like Metformin that are typically prescribed for Type 2 diabetics or prediabetics with poor insulin or glucose control.

Stomach ? PPI: Proton pump inhibitors (aka ?acid blockers?) prescribed typically for gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Painkillers: We?ve divided these into a few categories:

  • Aspirin: Technically a painkiller but often used for its blood-thinning / heart attack reducing effect.
  • NSAID: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, such as ibuprofen or naproxen drugs.
  • Opioid painkillers: The heavy-duty stuff such as morphine derivatives.

Uricosuric: This is prescribed for gout and works by increasing the excretion of uric acid in the urine.

Side effects

To figure out what would be important to our clients looking to lose fat, gain muscle, and improve their fitness or athletic performance, we divided side effects into a few categories.

Gastrointestinal: This includes things like liver function, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea/constipation, and changes in appetite or hunger.

Nervous system: This includes things like pain, dizziness, and neurologic muscle weakness.

Metabolic: This includes things like glucose and lipid (fat) processing, metabolic syndrome/Type 2 diabetes, and weight gain.

Circulatory/cardiovascular: This includes things like cardiovascular complications (e.g. heart rhythm disturbances), electrolyte regulation (e.g. sodium/potassium levels), fluid (e.g. water retention), hypertension, or blood clots.

Mental-emotional: This includes things like mood, focus, sleep, and perceived energy levels. Memory and cognition are also included, since these affect your ability to recall information (such as nutritional advice), follow instructions, focus on a plan, or make smart decisions.

Hormonal: This includes things like adrenal, thyroid, and sex hormones, which in turn affect metabolism and body composition.

Musculoskeletal: This includes things like muscle pain and weakness, cramping, or bone and soft tissue damage.

Nutrient interactions: This includes things like medication blocking vitamin or mineral absorption, or nutrient deficiencies presenting as other health problems (e.g. anemia or insomnia).

Other: This included miscellaneous side effects like increased or decreased sweating or poor body temperature regulation; FDA warnings about lactation; and ominous-sounding stuff like ?purple toe syndrome? (yep, that?s a thing ? who knew?).

Once we mapped out all of the relevant side effects, we were astonished to find out how much even relatively ?safe? medications can impact body composition, metabolic health, and athletic performance.

We started to realize: This is some serious stuff. Our clients and coaches need to know this.

Your medication ? even if it?s over-the-counter ? can significantly affect your fitness, nutritional response, metabolic environment, recovery, and overall health.

A sampler of possible side effects

Here are the side effects of some of the most common medications that we?ve listed above.

We can?t give you a complete list of each and every side effect you might experience. Nor will you inevitably experience these.

Some of these side effects are due to the actions of the drugs themselves. Other side effects occur with the nutrient changes or depletions (such as alterations in the way our bodies process minerals or electrolytes).

But here are some key items to consider, based on our list of common medications.

Allergy: Antihistamines?

Along with NSAIDs, allergy medications were some of the most common OTC drugs consumed daily or regularly.

Key side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Nausea/vomiting
  • Nutrient interactions: May deplete melatonin, leading to insomnia and metabolic dysregulation

Allergy: Beta agonists

Folks with allergies and asthma are likely most familiar with these as inhaler-style medications that ?open up? constricted airways.

Key side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: May suppress appetite
  • Nervous system: Tremor, muscular weakness, spasms
  • Metabolic: Elevated homocysteine (as a result of low B6)
  • Circulatory/cardiovascular: Elevated heart rate and CVD risk; postural hypotension
  • Mental-emotional: Anxiety, depression, insomnia
  • Nutrient interactions: May deplete vitamin B6 and potassium
  • Other: A meta-analysis of 19 studies reviewing the safety of this type of asthma medication showed that patients on the drugs are more than twice as likely to be hospitalized compared to those taking placebos. Advair, for example, carries a black box warning alerting patients to serious risks ? the drug itself may worsen asthma symptoms. Study researchers estimated that Advair may be responsible for as many as 80% of the 5,000 asthma-related deaths each year in the United States. In response to these findings, the FDA issued a warning about long-acting beta agonist drugs.

Allergy: Corticosteroids

Note that these side effects are also common to corticosteroids generally, and will vary depending on dose and type.

Key side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Corticosteroids are well-known to increase appetite and/or cause weight gain; changes in smell or taste
  • Metabolic: Increased blood glucose and lipids; weight gain (especially visceral and on upper back/neck); increased CVD risk
  • Circulatory/cardiovascular: Edema (fluid retention); high blood pressure; anemia; cardiac irregularities
  • Mental-emotional: Mood swings; irritability; anxiety; depression; insomnia
  • Hormonal: Amenorrhea; hypogonadism (which impacts muscle health); adrenal insufficiency; poor stress tolerance; hypothyroidism
  • Musculoskeletal: Loss of bone density; muscle/joint pain and cramping (esp. after steroid withdrawal); delayed healing
  • Nutrient interactions: May deplete Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, folic acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, chromium
  • Other: Mouth/respiratory infections

Anti-depressant/anti-anxiety drugs

Many people ? especially women ? are on more than one of these medication types, several of which are correlated with weight gain.

Key side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea or constipation; taste changes; GI upset; nausea/vomiting; possible liver damage (rare); appetite disruption
  • Nervous system: Dizziness, tremor
  • Metabolic: Weight gain
  • Circulatory/cardiovascular: Hyponatremia (low sodium)
  • Mental-emotional: Anxiety and worsening depression; fatigue; sleep disruption; insomnia
  • Hormonal: Irregular menstruation in women; hormonal abnormalities
  • Musculoskeletal: Muscle or joint pain
  • Nutrient interactions: May deplete melatonin, leading to insomnia and metabolic dysregulation

Anti-hypertensives

Anti-hypertensive drugs typically work on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone (RAA) system and dilate blood vessels, providing a bigger ?pipe? for blood to flow through. Since the RAA system is also involved in things like fluid/electrolyte balance and cardiac regulation, anti-hypertensives can have significant side effects.

Key side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Upset stomach; diarrhea; disturbances in taste (rare); constipation (rare); acute pancreatitis; nausea/vomiting; hepatitis; jaundice
  • Nervous system: Dizziness
  • Metabolic: Hyperglycemia (rare); hypoglycemia
  • Circulatory/cardiovascular: Cardiovascular events (including heart attacks); congestive heart failure; palpitations; edema; disrupted potassium; inappropriate secretion of anti-diuretic hormone (ADH); low blood pressure
  • Mental-emotional: Depression; insomnia; fatigue
  • Hormonal: Gynecomastia (in men)
  • Musculoskeletal: Muscle pain; back pain; cramping; rhabdomyelosis (rare)
  • Other: Some anti-hypertensive drugs can alter the metabolism of enkephalins and modulate cholinergic activity. Thus on rare occasions, anti-hypertensives have been linked to psychiatric complications such as mania, cognitive disturbances, and even hallucinations.

Beta blockers

Beta blockers have the opposite effect as beta agonists ? they inhibit particular stress chemicals such as epinephrine (adrenaline) binding to cells? beta receptors. They?re used?to treat many cardiac conditions and hypertension. The most significant effect of beta blockers for an active population is decreased exercise tolerance/endurance and hypoglycemia.

Key side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea; dry mouth; nausea/vomiting
  • Nervous system: Dizziness
  • Metabolic: Altered lipid and blood glucose metabolism; hypoglycemia. Beta blockers used with diuretics may increase the risk of diabetes.
  • Circulatory/cardiovascular: Cardiovascular events; edema; hyponatremia; hyperkalemia (low potassium); low blood pressure
  • Mental-emotional: Sleep disturbances; nightmares; insomnia.
  • Nutrient interactions: May deplete CoQ10 and melatonin, leading to reduced energy and heart function; insomnia

Birth control drugs

The effects of birth control hormones will differ by formulation/brand, synthetic vs. bio-identical hormones, dosage, and delivery method (e.g. oral, injections, implants, transdermal, etc.). These side effects cover the most common birth control medications.

In our practice, we have found that most women taking synthetic hormones (i.e. most commercial birth control formulations) have trouble losing fat.

Key side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Abdominal pain; nausea/vomiting; jaundice; gallbladder problems. Rarer liver side effects have included focal nodular hyperplasia, intrahepatic cholestasis, liver cell adenomas, hepatic granulomas, hepatic hemangiomas and well differentiated hepatocellular carcinomas.
  • Metabolic: Weight gain. Disrupted lipid metabolism: Progestins can decrease HDL (and HDL2) cholesterol levels and increase LDL cholesterol levels. Because estrogen opposes progestins? actions, changes to lipid profiles depend on the relative amount, type, and potency of the estrogen and progestin in a given product.
  • Circulatory/cardiovascular: Cardiovascular events and cardiac abnormalities; edema; anemia; elevated homocysteine; blood pressure deregulation
  • Mental-emotional: Depression; irritability; memory loss and ?brain fog?; fatigue/lethargy
  • Musculoskeletal: Bone demineralization; muscle cramps
  • Nutrient interactions: May deplete Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and folic acid, Vitamin C, as well as magnesium, selenium and zinc.
  • Other: Decreased immune function

Insulin/glucose management drugs

Coaching clients who are still solidifying good nutrition habits and regular activity, or carrying a lot of body fat, often have disrupted glucose and insulin control (as do women with PCOS), so they take drugs such as Metformin that help to regulate this. Unfortunately, this drug group may exacerbate some of the underlying problems, such as weight gain.

Key side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Upset stomach; diarrhea; constipation; bloating and gas; taste changes; nausea/vomiting (related to hypoglycemia); elevated liver enzymes; jaundice; increased hunger
  • Nervous system: Dizziness
  • Metabolic: Weight gain; hypoglycemia; dyslipidemia; diabetic acidosis
  • Circulatory/cardiovascular: Edema; hyponatremia; low blood pressure
  • Nutrient interactions: May deplete CoQ10, vitamin B12, and folic acid, leading cardiovascular problems, weak immune system, low energy; anemia, tiredness, weakeness, increased cardiovascular disease risk; birth defects, cervical dysplasia, anemia, heart disease, cancer risk

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs)

Many people take these for everyday aches and pains as well as more chronic problems like arthritis or long-term injury recovery. Unfortunately, they have significant GI and cardiovascular side effects, and may even worsen existing musculoskeletal problems or impede healing.

Key side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Constipation; general abdominal discomfort; nausea and vomiting; dyspepsia; diarrhea; stomatitis; peptic ulcerations; gastrointestinal hemorrhage or perforation; ulcerative esophagitis; eosinophilic colitis; salivary gland inflammation; pancreatitis; gastroesophageal reflux; flatulence; diverticulitis; dry mouth; dysphagia (trouble swallowing); eructation (burping); gastritis; hemorrhoids; hiatal hernia; blood in stools; tenesmus (feeling of constantly needing to pass stools, despite an empty colon); tooth disorder; intestinal obstruction; cholelithiasis (stones in the gallbladder); elevated liver enzymes; jaundice; hepatitis.
  • Nervous system: Dizziness; impaired concentration
  • Metabolic: Hypoglycemia; hyperglycemia; hypercholestemia
  • Circulatory/cardiovascular: Edema; palpitations; elevated blood pressure; shortness of breath; cardiovascular thromboembolic adverse events (heart attacks, angina pectoris, and peripheral vascular events); aggravated hypertension, syncope, congestive heart failure, ventricular fibrillation, pulmonary embolism, cerebrovascular accident, peripheral gangrene, angina pectoris, coronary artery disorder, myocardial infarction, palpitation, tachycardia, thrombophlebitis; unstable angina, aortic valve incompetence, sinus bradycardia, and ventricular hypertrophy
  • Mental-emotional: Depression; insomnia; sleep disturbances
  • Musculoskeletal: Muscle pain and weakness; myopathy; connective tissue injury (e.g. tendinoses)
  • Nutrient interactions: May deplete folic acid, which can lead to anemia, depression, elevated homocysteine, increased risk of certain cancers

Statins

These ?cholesterol-lowering? drugs inhibit the liver?s synthesis of cholesterol. However, because cholesterol is such an important molecule in the body, interfering with its formation can have wide-ranging effects. Particularly of concern for active people is the soft-tissue and muscular damage that can occur, but the rest of the side effects are no picnic either.

Key side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, dyspepsia; constipation; gastroenteritis; flatulence; periodontal abscess; gastritis; pancreatitis; nausea/vomiting. Hepatic side effects include altered liver functions; elevations in liver enzymes; elevated bilirubin; hepatitis; jaundice; fatty changes in the liver; cirrhosis; fulminant hepatic necrosis; and liver failure.
  • Nervous system: Headache; dizziness; insomnia; hypertonia; paresthesia; vertigo; neuralgia; drowsiness; fatigue; weakness; cranial nerve dysfunction; tremor; memory loss; decline in cognitive function; peripheral neuropathy; polyneuropathy; and peripheral nerve palsy.
  • Circulatory/cardiovascular: Angina; vasodilation; palpitations; edema; high blood pressure
  • Mental-emotional: Depression; anxiety; impaired cognition; decreased libido; insomnia; suicidal thoughts; delusions; paranoia; agitation; nightmares; confusion
  • Musculoskeletal: Severe myopathy and rhabdomyolysis (rare); myalgia; muscle weakness; back pain; arthritis; tendon rupture. Increased creatine kinase; myoglobinuria (muscle protein excreted in urine); proteinuria (excretion of protein in urine); renal failure. Taking statins with gemfibrozil (fibric acid derivatives), niacin, cyclosporine, erythromycin (macrolides) or azole antifungals may increase the incidence and severity of musculoskeletal side effects. Statin-induced myopathy is also worse in older people, smaller people, women, and people with renal and/or hepatic dysfunction, perioperative periods, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, and alcoholism.
  • Nutrient interactions: May deplete CoQ10, leading to reduced energy and heart function

Stomach: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)

Along with statins, proton pump inhibitors (often known as ?acid reducers?) are one of the most-prescribed drugs in North America for gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). Unfortunately, they can wreak havoc with the rest of the GI tract ? and might even worsen the original problem.

Key side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Bowel irregularity; aggravated constipation; dyspepsia; dysphagia (trouble swallowing); dysplasia (abnormal lining of the stomach or epithelial layer/mucosa); epigastric pain; eructation (aka burping); esophageal disorder; diarrhea; gastroenteritis; GI hemorrhage; changes in appetite; ulcerative stomatitis; nausea/vomiting; microscopic colitis; pancreatitis; bilirubinemia (bilirubin in the blood); abnormal liver function, and increase in liver enzymes; hepatitis; jaundice.
  • Nervous system: Confusion; dizziness; hypoesthesia (reduced sense of touch or sensation); insomnia; migraine aggravation; paresthesia (?pins and needles? sensation); sleep disorder/sleepiness; tremor; vertigo; and seizures
  • Metabolic: Glycosuria (excretion of glucose in urine); hyperuricemia (elevated uric acid); hyponatremia (low sodium); increased alkaline phosphatase; excessive thirst; vitamin B12 deficiency, and weight increase/decrease. May cause low serum magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia) if taken for prolonged periods of time (in most cases, longer than one year).
  • Circulatory/cardiovascular: Angioedema; tachycardia; chest pain; irregular heartbeat; chest pain; edema; high blood pressure
  • Hormonal: Goiter
  • Musculoskeletal: Muscle spasm (tetany); arthralgia; aggravation of arthritis; arthropathy; cramps; fibromyalgia syndrome; hernia; hypertonia; polymyalgia rheumatica; back pain; myalgia (muscle pain); bone fracture (esp. with long-term use).
  • Nutrient interactions: May deplete folic acid, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, calcium, iron, zinc, and protein

Thyroid drugs

Many people in our coaching programs ? particularly women ? are struggling with the weight gain and sluggishness of low thyroid function and are consequently on medication for it.

Key side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea; increased gastric motility
  • Nervous system: Seizures (rare)
  • Metabolic: Weight loss; changes in diabetes symptoms
  • Circulatory/cardiovascular: Cardiovascular events; heart palpitations; high blood pressure; tachycardia; arrhythmia; tachycardia, cardiopulmonary arrest; hypotension; myocardial infarction; phlebitis; and angina; all of which may be exacerbated in patients with underlying cardiovascular disorders. TSH suppression is associated with an increased incidence of premature ventricular beats, an increased left ventricular mass index, and enhanced left ventricular systolic function.
  • Mental-emotional: Insomnia
  • Hormonal: Menstrual changes, adrenal insufficiency
  • Musculoskeletal: Osteoporosis & loss of bone density
  • Nutrient interactions: May deplete iron, leading to anemia, weakness, fatigue, hair loss, brittle nails, and weakened immune system.

What to do

Be a careful consumer and an informed patient. Research all medication choices carefully. Your pharmacist especially can be a great resource.

If you take medication ? even occasionally ? double-check all of its side effects. MerckManual.com and RxList.com are helpful resources.

Treat over-the-counter medications as carefully as prescription medications. OTC doesn?t necessarily mean side-effect-free.

Double check interactions between medications and all supplements. Again, check with your pharmacist and do your own research. As you can see above, many common medications impair proper digestion and GI function as well as nutrient uptake and use.?If, for example, your liver isn?t functioning properly, any other supplements you ingest may not be properly or safely metabolized. Additionally, medications may work synergistically with supplements. For instance, combining an allergy/asthma beta-agonist with a ?fat burner? (which has stimulant effects) could be bad news for cardiac safety.

Recognize that medications have powerful effects on body composition, physical performance, and overall wellness. If you?re struggling to get results with a solid health and fitness program, underlying health conditions and medication use might be playing a role.

Consider getting coaching. If you?d like to reduce your medications through improving your nutrition and exercise habits and consistency, check out our coaching programs for men and women. A good coach can also help work with your current medications to help you get the best possible results for your body, no matter what you?re working with.

Whatever the outcome you?re getting from your fitness and nutrition program, keep doing the healthy behaviors that truly matter. The better your general fitness, health, and nutrition, often the fewer medications you?ll need to take.
