Job Code: CDS-329

Our ambitious big data startup client needs a seriously database- and UNIX-savvy contract Technical Writer to create original API reference as well as installation and tuning documentation for database administrators of its innovative geospatial-temporal analytics tool.

Their product creates real-time models and immediately actionable intelligence from large-scale sources such as sensor networks and social graphs. It is written in Java, C, and C++, and runs on Linux (CentOS) and clustered, distributed, commodity processors.

You?ll work mostly offsite on your own equipment ? although, if you?re near Seattle and can visit their office for initial meetings, so much the better ? gathering information by phone, IM, and email from local SMEs, and authoring PDF and/or wiki content. The product ships in June.

The right candidate for this project has strong RDBMS skills and has a clue about big data (Hadoop, MapReduce, Cassandra, etc). Working knowledge of clustered distributed systems, Linux, and HTTP are also important. You?ll get bonus points for understanding Python, REST, and JSON.

This will be part-time (~20 hours/week), offsite work, through at least the end of May. You?d be paid on a 1099 basis, unless you prefer W2.

Required:

  • Strong technical understanding of relational databases (RDBMS)
  • Working knowledge of Linux
  • Ability to read some C, C++, and/or Java
  • Conceptual (or better) understanding of big data (Hadoop, MapReduce, Cassandra, etc)
  • Strong software reference documentation portfolio and reachable references
  • Part-time availability
  • Ability to work offsite on your own equipment

Desired:

  • Working knowledge of Python, REST, and/or JSON
  • Experience working with Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, PostgreSQL or similar enterprise RDBMSs
  • Ability to make initial onsite visit(s) to Seattle
