'Russia is ending its dependency on the global superpower' ? Pushkov

US President Barack Obama (L) and Russian President Vladimir Putin.(Reuters / Jim Young)

Moscow announced that it has terminated an agreement with Washington to cooperate in law and drug enforcement, continuing the trend of deteriorating diplomatic relations.

?Russia is reforming its relationship with the US. We have terminated the third agreement with the U.S. in the last six months,? Aleksey Pushkov, the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Russian Lower House, commented on Twitter.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed an order to terminate the bilateral deal, the government said in a statement on its official website on Wednesday. The agreement, formalized between Russia and the US on September 25, 2002, was declared ?out of touch with today?s realities and has exhausted its potential,? the statement read.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has been instructed to notify Washington of the decision.

As part of the now-defunct bilateral deal, the US agreed to provide financial assistance to relevant Russian entities for anti-crime measures, among other activities. Such philanthropy, however, has raised eyebrows in Russia and prompted questions over the real motive behind Washington?s efforts.

It was largely due to these suspicions that Moscow informed the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in September that its services in Russia were no longer wanted or needed.

In a recent interview with NPR, outgoing US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton commented on Russia?s decision to shut down the USAID office: ?We can take our aid money and go elsewhere and help people who welcome us.?

Clinton?s comment goes far towards explaining the rift in Russia-US relations: Russia has largely escaped from the clutches of its post-Soviet depression, and is now has a dynamic economy with a growing middle class and huge natural resources, which no longer needs handouts from Washington.

The Foreign Ministry said that Russian civil society has become fully mature, and did not need any "external direction" from USAID, which was also blamed for attempting to manipulate Russia?s internal political processes.

Is Washington, feeling a bit like a jaded partner in a tumultuous relationship, seeking to break off the honeymoon in dramatic fashion?

Last year, the decision by a group of US legislators to implement the so-called ?Magnitsky Act? against specific Russian officials ? who the US Senators believe should be held accountable in the death of Sergey Magnitsky, an accountant with Hermitage Capital who died in prison in 2009 amidst a tax evasion investigation ? has triggered a diplomatic domino effect between the two countries.

Shortly after the passage of the Magnitsky Act, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the Dima Yakovlev bill, which bans American citizens from adopting Russian orphans.

In an interview with US media, Prime Minister Medvedev emphasized that Russia?s decision to introduce the adoption legislation had no connection with US legislation against Russian citizens.

?This law expresses concerns of the Russian parliament, the Russian State Duma and the Federal Council over destiny of our children? Therefore, despite the fact that many saw it as targeting individual American citizens who want to adopt Russian children, that?s certainly not the case,? Medvedev told CNN.

The US also recently said it would end its cooperation in the Russian-American Bilateral Presidential Commission on Civil Society.

This ongoing atmosphere of animosity between the two former Cold War rivals shows that relations between Moscow and Washington have entered a cooling period. It also shows that Russia is less willing to depend on the United States for services that it can afford on its own.

Meanwhile, Russian experts say that relations between Moscow and Washington have entered a dangerous tit-for-tat stage and warned against further escalation.?

Honorary chairman of the Foreign and Defense Policy Council, Sergey Karaganov told RIA Novosti news agency that in his view Russia and US have put themselves on a path that is very difficult to step off. At the same time, the analyst noted that the so called ?reset? had not created any solid foundation for better relations between the two countries.

Karaganov added that he hoped that the leaders of the two nations would be wise enough not to allow further deterioration in relations.

Viktor Kuvaldin of the Gorbachev Foundation also urged the leaders of Russia and the United States to put an end to the standoff as soon as possible.

?Unfortunately, when a spiral starts unwinding it acquires its own logic. People tend to forget who started what and resort to the ?eye for an eye tooth for a tooth? policy, Kuvaldin said.

Russian authorities should stop the process and reach an agreement with their US partners so that they (Washington) would follow suit.

Erection problems a red flag for 'silent' heart disease and early death

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Men with erection problems now have an extra reason to see their doctor: even relatively minor erectile difficulties could signal 'silent' heart disease and may indicate an increased risk of dying early from any cause, a major new study shows.

An Australian study ? the world's largest to investigate the link between erectile dysfunction and heart disease ? has found that men with erectile dysfunction have a higher risk of hospital admission for heart disease, even if they have no history of heart problems. They are also at greater risk of premature death from any cause.

The research, from the Sax Institute's 45 and Up Study and published in international journal PLOS Medicine today, is the first to show a direct link between how severe a man's erection problem is and his risk of dying early or being treated in hospital for heart disease.

"The risks of future heart disease and premature death increased steadily with severity of erectile dysfunction, both in men with and without a history of cardiovascular disease," lead author and 45 and Up Study Scientific Director Professor Emily Banks said.

"Rather than causing heart disease, erectile dysfunction is more likely to be a symptom or signal of underlying 'silent' heart disease and could in future become a useful marker to help doctors predict the risk of a cardiovascular problem. This is a sensitive topic but men shouldn't suffer in silence; there are many effective treatments, both for erectile dysfunction and for cardiovascular disease."

Erection problems are very common: around one in five men aged 40 and over report moderate or severe erectile dysfunction.

While previous studies have shown that men with severe erectile dysfunction are more likely than men with no erectile difficulties to have cardiovascular events such as heart disease or stroke, this study (funded by the Heart Foundation and the NSW Office for Health and Medical Research) is the first to review gradients of erectile dysfunction from none, to mild, moderate and severe forms.

Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Health Director Dr Rob Grenfell said the results were nationally significant and demonstrated why governments should invest in large health studies such as the 45 and Up Study.

"These results tell us that every man who is suffering from any degree of erectile dysfunction should be seeking medical assistance as early as possible and also insisting on a heart health check by their GP at the same time," Dr Grenfell said.

The researchers, from the Sax Institute, Australian National University, The University of Sydney, Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and The George Institute for Global Health examined hospital and death records for 95,000 men from the 45 and Up Study ? the largest ongoing study of healthy ageing in the Southern Hemisphere, with more than 250,000 people taking part.

The men gave information about health and lifestyle factors and were followed for a two to three-year period, recording 7855 hospital admissions related to cardiovascular disease and 2304 deaths.

"The large number of men in the study meant we could also look at the risks in relation to different types of cardiovascular disease," Professor Banks said. "We found men with erectile dysfunction were at higher risk of heart attack, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease and heart conduction problems."

Video: The Obama-Clinton interview and what it means for 2016

>>> good evening. i'm chris matthews in washington. let me start tonight with this, barack and hillary , good-bye or hello? was last night's dual appearance on 60 minutes a fond good-bye or a statement? was it the president's way of saying i know which way the wind is blowing? was it barack obama saying i want a democrat to replace me? hillary clinton is the best bet to do it, i'm ready for this to happen? it's powerful stuff any way you listen to it. i think secretary clinton will run for president. i don't see how she can walk away from it. she's the one woman right now in the picture who could win the president next time. not only that, i think she's the favorite of either gender and either party to win the presidency why 2016 . how does she tell the women of this country, all her backers across the country, that she doesn't want to run? this is the big story in politics right now. it will be until she announces she's running. it's the story of suspension only because it's about when she signals her move, not whether. eugene mccarthy once told me it's easier to run for president than to stop. once someone gets out there, puts their very being on the platform for the presidency, it doesn't go away. it stays with you. and secretary hillary clinton 's case, she carry was her not just her first name, but her husband's. he clearly wants her to run, and that means he will lobby her like mad. i don't know of a more persuasive person in the kun and i can only assume he holds special influence with his wife. anyway, i think the real decision will be made by hillary rodham clinton herself. i believe she made that decision back at wellesley when she was a super student leader before she met william jefferson clinton and that decision i believe holds. get ready for a real doozy next time around. it's all right starting. exciting politics in in krung century has only begun. i'm joined by "the huffington post 's" howard fineman and on her way to greatness, joy reid.

>> she's there.

>> aren't you the smart gentleman.

>> appreciate it.

>> let's watch this right now. looks like the president boosted this interview. they wanted it. 60 minutes prefaced their key question by saying it was his understanding that the joint interview wassed president's idea. he asked the question on everyone's mind, why. let's listen to steve and then the president.

>> well, the main thing is i just wanted to have a chance to publicly say thank you because i think hillary will go down as one of the finest secretary of states we've had. i want the country to appreciate just what an extraordinary role she's played during the course of my administration and a lot of the successes we've had internationally have been because of her hard work.

>> there's no political tea leaves to be read here?

>> we don't have any tea. we've got some water here, the best i can tell.

>> joy, that was a fairly lame response. we don't have any tea here by the sgecretary of state. this is the biggest set of jobs, first lady, united states of new york, secretary of state, the great he is appointed position on the planet. she's given it up, as he said last night, very importantly i thought, i would like you to stay. it was her decision to walk after four years. he could have stayed for eight or at least a lot more than she stayed. what does it mean to you -- i don't think that was a gold watch ceremony last night. i think it was a portent, a statement.

>> i agree. i think it was an attempt by the president to bestow a little favor on hillary clinton . look, joe biden , the vice president, who a lot of people also believe really wants to run, i believe he wants to run, and i think he's been sending a lot of signals out there that he's very much interested in getting excited. he's gotten a lot ever big assignments and gotten a lot of favor from the president of the united states . i think this was an attempt to even the flaying field. the job she ended up taking was a lot higher profile in the end than vice president which a lot of hillary land really wanted him to make her his running mate and he didn't. he gave her a higher profile position and now he's given her a huge boost toward 2016 .

>> well, my question to you, since you raised it, i always like to request the question you raise, joy, will joe biden quit if she runs? will he pull out of the race if he's in the race for a year or two, will he pull out if she says i'm going?

>> i think the game between biden and hillary has been this. i don't think they would primary each other but i think each of them has been try og to put faths on the ground --

>> but will he pull out if she comes in?

>> i think if she makes a strong manufacture to run, i think biden would back down because i think the president is going to have to have a conversation with one of these two and say i got to back one of you, i can't back you both and i'm not going to be neutral. the president really wants his legacy to be another democratic president.

>> you answered my question well. howard , can you answer it? if you don't know, you don't know. we lived through mccarthy/kennedy, bobby kennedy , gene mccarthy . that was terrible for the democratic party . two great candidates forced to run against each other because bobby got in late.

>> first of all, i think part of this was about the next four years of president obama . it's not just about --

>> how does he need hillary ? because he didn't put women in top positions?

>> hillary is a major figure in the democratic party , was a major figure before he ever came on the scene. her husband, bill clinton , is still a major figure in the party even though that galls barack obama , and it wouldn't do to have this other royal family in the democratic tent out there undermining obama 's candidacy or -- excuse me, obama 's presidency in any way. this was a goodwill gesture on the way out of the door.

>> to keep her on base.

>> could tep her close, absolutely. keep your enemies close and your friends closer.

>> let me ask you back the question i put to joy and she asked and answered. will joe biden bow out if it's clear hillary is running?

>> i think so. and i think so because hillary has a much deeper, broader base in the party. i know joe biden well, i have covered him for a long time. he's nothing if not a political realist. if he assesses the situation a couple years down the road and sees that the clinton machine is still out there, and by the way, hillary took the twol clinton man to the state department . that was hillary land over there, not obama land.

>> i understand that completely.

>> if that's still going on, i think joe biden will look at it and say i'm not sure i have the organization to do it, and also he might not want to call the president out on it and take the gamble with the president because i'm not sure he would necessarily get the answer that he'd want to hear.

>> steve kroft tried to get at the political meaning of the interview. this is rare. usually in our business if you know joy and howard , if you get an interview of this incredible quality, the president and secretary of state, the two most important people with bill clinton in the democratic party , you don't ask why you got it. but here he is apparently again trying to figure out why the two showed up together. here he is, steve kroft .

>> i have to ask you, what's the date of expiration on this endorsement?

>> oh, steve , i know --

>> i have to ask that question. come on. you're sitting here together. everybody in town is talking about it already. and this is taking place.

>> you know, steve , i got to tell you, you guys in the press are incorrigible and it was literally inaugurated four days ago.

>> right.

>> and you're talking about elections four years from now.

>> yeah, and i am, as you know, steve , i am still secretary of state so i am out of politics an i'm forbidden from even hearing these questions.

>> as steve martin would tay mussily say, excuse me. they asked to come on " 60 minutes ." they like the press coverage they got today and last night. they love the fact we're talking about it. it seems to me for him to mock the very message when they are the message is a little weird on the part of the president.

>> please, steve . did you see the body language on hillary . that's a woman who knows the presidency is basically hers for the taking if she wants it. who could stop her? she knows it. she's as relaxed as i have ever seen her. the best thing to do is step back, get out of this job, and spend the next three years preparing herself to run for president if she wants it.

>> was this a move -- so many things in politics follow other things that wouldn't have happened if they didn't have that thing before them. do you think this was to give her a really nice sendoff after the rather unpleasant experience with ron johnson and rand paul and those hearings this week?

>> there are a couple things. first of all, it is true that hillary 's last sort of public performance in an official capacity was defending herself on the hill well, but under attack.

>> on benghazi .

>> on benghazi . that's number one. i think the president and hillary have a mutual interest in having benghazi go away. and go away with a nice ribbon tied around it. that's number one. another thing was something you mentioned to me earlier, which is that the president has gotten a lot of criticism lately for not having picked a lot of new nominees who aren't white males.

>> yeah.

>> and to the remind people that one of the most important picks in his first term was a woman and not just any woman, but hillary rodham clinton , i think was a big deal . he was kind of reminding everybody, especially reminding women, especially hillary supporters, reminding activists, reminding feminists, look who is sitting next to me. i made this person secretary of state. has the additional benefit of editing bill clinton completely out of the picture.

>> let me --

>> that's the real tension here. the real tension is bill clinton and barack obama . it's like the big chill turned into the deep freeze .

>> okay. hold that thought because your idea of putting clinton aside which is unimaginable.

>> at least for a few minutes.

>> he was on tv when george w. bill was speaking at andrews on a separate screen. let me ask you because i thought of this and howard did give me credit for it in the green room .

>> where all the important work is done.

>> he put the secretary of state on television with him as an equal, a peer. they talked about each other being partners almost. was it ameliorated, softened, the lack of any woman of the top positions the president has named for the second term and it did shut everybody up in a very nice way. it's smart, cosmetic politics i thought. your thoughts, joy.

>> definitely. it puts her in the buddy act. you have seen a lot of him and joe biden together. him and his new chief of act. there's a buddy act he's got going on with all these guys. one of the things --

>> boy/girl buddy act. that's new.

>> if you think about it, one of the pairings you haven't seen a lot of over the past four years is barack obama and hillary clinton next to each other, together. i think it's important not just for the cosmetics because of the cabinet picks but because you have to at some point mesh hillary land and obama world. they're two very different camps.

>> what happens -- does 40 or 50 or whatever number of people working in the state department whose jobs will cease to exist the day she leaves because they're owl appointments by her, what will they all do for a living while she decides whether she's running or not?

>> well, i think a lot of them will become the sort of staff on the ground that's in the hillary clinton campaign in waiting. a lot of them will become policy advisers. i'm sure some will remain and you will see some people that will stay on because it's also a goodwill gesture from kerry land which also doesn't have a huge deep base.

>> i agree with joy. i think john kerry is going to do hillary clinton a favor of keeping those people around.

>> some.

>> at least for a while.

>> who knows. i don't know.

>> at least for a decent serval.

>> it's a fascinating discussion. we love it because as long as hillary is in the news, the news is exciting. i think hillary clinton is going to run for president and i think joy agrees with me. i think howard probably agrees to me but keeping his powder dry. he's just smiling now. i don't see why anybody walks away from the presidency. then again i don't think we can predict the future.

>> i think it's about obama managing the next few years on his own. he wants to keep her in view and on a friendly basis.

>> keep your enemies in front of you even if it's not an enemy. either it was a great actor performance or something really important. probably a combination. thank you, howard , my friend who shares in the skepticism which makes this a beautiful business. joy reid, you're great. i'm known for saying that, you're great.

>>> op wednesday hillary clinton is andrea mitchell 's guest. 1:00 p.m . eastern on wednesday on this network msnbc. coming up, deal or no deal ? a bipartisan group of senators has reached agreement on an immigration reform bill. wow. it could create a pathway for illegal immigrants to become citizens. it sounds great will republicans vote for it? will it have teeth? will it work when so many past efforts at immigration policy have filed?

>>> also, president obama has said he hoped his re-election would break the republican fever of endless obstructions, but even he admits that it hasn't happened yet. and now we have paul ryan saying the president is ignoring the country's problems in order to focus on the strategy. paul ryan you're the biggest disappointment right, left, or center this country.

>>> sarah palin lost her biggest megaphone when fox news dropped her the other day. her contract is gone. no thanks to keep her on the payroll. a lot of republicans say the gop has to stop being the stupid party. maybe getting rid of that is part of it. who knows. maybe cnn will pick her up.

>>> lef it to our friends on the right to find new conspiracies. first they question whether hillary clinton had a concussion. new they want to know whether he was pushed. sickos. you're watching "hardball," the

Library solves digital age puppy potty problem

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? San Francisco's animal control agency is relying on donations to solve an unforeseen problem in the digital age ? a shortage of newspapers needed for potty training puppies.

It seems digital newspaper subscriptions and smartphones have cut the once abundant supplies of old newsprint.

Animal Care & Control has been relying on public contributions and San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/XLirUN ) donations to line the cages of shelter puppies that still aren't trained.

Now, the San Francisco Public Library is donating old newspapers to make sure the shelter has a consistent paper stream.

Animal control will pick up the newspapers twice a month.

By John Newland, Staff Writer, NBC News

A gunman shot his ex-girlfriend and an employee at a Seattle bar before being killed by police Sunday night, authorities said.

The shooter walked into The Twilight Exit about 10:15 p.m. local time (1:15 a.m ET Monday) and opened fire, first wounding his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend then a 30-year-old bar worker who tried to intervene, Seattle police said in a statement.

Police said the suspect later raised his gun and fired at them. One officer returned fire, killing the man.

The victims were taken to a hospital and their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, police said. The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said there were ?"a number of witnesses" inside the bar when the shooting occurred.

The Twilight Exit's?Facebook page has more than 2,800 "likes" and customers were already posting messages of concern early Monday.

IUI to Roux-en-Y to ??: Home Improvements and Baby Shower!

My shower was amazing. ?JP and one of my best friends conspired to surprise me, though in the end decided to spill the beans to make sure that I was fine with the location and guest list. ?Which, of course, I was. ?I am fairly easy to please. ?It was held at a locally-owed cafe/restaurant across the street from our store. ?Adorable little place. ?I got tons of of adorable stuff, and nothing that I plan to return. ?Please don't misunderstand this to be a complaint, because it very much isn't, but it's truly amazing how extremely little of what I got came off of my registry. ?It makes me wish I hadn't worried so much about building it!

Several folks couldn't make it due to illness, and I totally appreciate the thoughtfulness of not bringing their germs near me. ?I don't know if it's as bad everywhere, but EVERYONE around here has the flu! ?It's crazy!

The very best part was spending time with my family and friends. ?My mom, grandma, and favorite aunt drove 5 hours to be there. ?Two of my cousins drove 2+ hours to be there. ?It was truly a wonderful afternoon. ?My mom and grandma grabbed a hotel room and stayed through most of Sunday morning, as well. ?They took me shopping to grab a few things that I still needed. ?I was so sad to see them leave, as I won't seem them again until baby girl is born. ?I'll stop rambling and get right to the pictures!

I didn't think to take a shot of the outside of the place, so this is one I found with a Google image search.

A shot I took while no one was paying attention. ?I was just trying to get a feel for the party in general.

Same here. ?It gives you an idea of the decorations and whatnot. ?So cute!

My unwrapped haul. ?Nice, right?

Me standing next to my unwrapped haul! ?So much pink, I love it!

The best Mammaw ever, and one of my daughter's namesakes. ?Marilyn Jean. ?Looking pretty gorgeous for 83, if I do say so myself.

Caught mid-laugh, ready to unwrap the first of the gifts. ?This was my my Pack n' Play!

My travel system! ?I pretended like I didn't go pick out, buy, and wrap this myself, and was paid back later. Love it!

Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur...

An adorable hoodie and pants set from my younger sister, who is house-sitting in FL and couldn't be there.

I had no idea how many baby clothes existed with something embroidered on the butt, but I love them! ?This was from my twin sister, who also couldn't make the trip from Denver.

Bathtub from my mother-in-law and her sister.

My mommy found this little shelf and blocks, and customized it with baby's name and some of my nursery colors. ?So sweet!

Mom found almost the whole alphabet at a yard sale, but didn't want to lug all of them south. ?So she just brought baby's initials!

Here I am, caught making a face, gushing over some adorable little mittens.

JP and I with the sign that my friend made. ?Very cute!

My aunt threw this picture together. ?It's part of one of my maternity shots, and some hand-made booties.

Another shot of the poster, along with a little preemie outfit from my mother-in-law. ?I can't believe how adorable all the tiny little clothes are!

I don't care much for this picture, but it models one of the 6 desserts that we had our choice of, as part of the party package. ?This was the coconut cream cheesecake with caramel sauce. ?Oh my!

Here is JP modeling the pineapple upside-down cake. ?Also yummy! ?There was also triple-layer fudge cake, a brownie a-la-mode, turtle cheesecake, and bread pudding with a rum sauce. ?Omg.

This, is my very very favorite picture from the day. ?JP modeling the diaper bags for the guests. ?There is an ongoing poll as to which looks best on him. ?We'd love to have your input!

Switching gears, I'm going to share just a couple of shots from our home projects in progress. ?Please keep in mind that my house is very old, and in need of a lot of help. ?We've gotten a TON done, but there is still a lot to do.

This is the hallway. ?We tore out disgusting carpet, and found asbestos tile underneath. ?Don't worry, as long as we don't turn it into powder, it's harmless. ?The walls and trim are freshly painted, and very soon driftood laminate is going down over top the tile. ?This same floor goes throughout my back room, as well, and will also be covered with the same laminate.

This is the future nursery. ?I know, I know, we have a lot to do. ?JP had been using it for storage for about 10 years, so it took a very long time to get it this cleared out. ?We'll use this as a "before" shot of sorts, and as soon as we get more work done, I'll share some "after" shots.

Time for us to grab some lunch and head to our weekly BPP. ?Catch you all later!

'Quantum smell' idea gains ground

A controversial theory that the way we smell involves a quantum physics effect has received a boost, following experiments with human subjects.

It challenges the notion that our sense of smell depends only on the shapes of molecules we sniff in the air.

Instead, it suggests that the molecules' vibrations are responsible.

A way to test it is with two molecules of the same shape, but with different vibrations. A report in PLOS ONE shows that humans can distinguish the two.

Tantalisingly, the idea hints at quantum effects occurring in biological systems - an idea that is itself driving a new field of science, as the article Are birds hijacking quantum physics? points out.

But the theory - first put forward by Luca Turin, now of the Fleming Biomedical Research Sciences Centre in Greece - remains contested and divisive.

The idea that molecules' shapes are the only link to their smell is well entrenched, but Dr Turin said there were holes in the idea.

He gave the example of molecules that include sulphur and hydrogen atoms bonded together - they may take a wide range of shapes, but all of them smell of rotten eggs.

"If you look from the [traditional] standpoint... it's really hard to explain," Dr Turin told BBC News.

"If you look from the standpoint of an alternative theory - that what determines the smell of a molecule is the vibrations - the sulphur-hydrogen mystery becomes absolutely clear."

Molecules can be viewed as a collection of atoms on springs, so the atoms can move relative to one another. Energy of just the right frequency - a quantum - can cause the "springs" to vibrate, and in a 1996 paper in Chemical Senses Dr Turin said it was these vibrations that explained smell.

The mechanism, he added, was "inelastic electron tunnelling": in the presence of a specific "smelly" molecule, an electron within a smell receptor in your nose can "jump" - or tunnel - across it and dump a quantum of energy into one of the molecule's bonds - setting the "spring" vibrating.

But the established smell science community has from the start argued that there is little proof of this.

Of horses and unicorns

One way to test the idea was to prepare two molecules of identical shape but with different vibrations - done by replacing a molecule's hydrogen atoms with their heavier cousins called deuterium.

The work in Nature Neuroscience suggested that human participants could not distinguish between the two, and thus that vibrations played no role in what we smell.

But in 2011, Dr Turin and colleagues published a paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showing that fruit flies can distinguish between the heavier and lighter versions of the same molecule.

A repeat of the test with humans in the new paper finds that, as in Prof Vosshall's work, the subjects could not tell the two apart. But the team then developed a brand new, far larger pair of molecules - cyclopentadecanone - with more hydrogen or deuterium bonds to amplify the purported effect.

In double-blind tests, in which neither the experimenter nor the participant knew which sample was which, subjects were able to distinguish between the two versions.

Still, Prof Vosshall believes the vibrational theory to be no more than fanciful.

"I like to think of the vibration theory of olfaction and its proponents as unicorns. The rest of us studying olfaction are horses," she told BBC News.

"The problem is that proving that a unicorn exists or does not exist is impossible. This debate on the vibration theory or the existence of unicorns will never end, but the very important underlying question of why things smell the way they do will continue to be answered by the horses among us."

Tim Jacob, a smell researcher at the University of Cardiff, said the work was "supportive but not conclusive".

"But the fact is that nobody has been able to unequivocally contradict [Dr Turin]," he told BBC News.

"There are many, many problems with the shape theory of smell - many things it doesn't explain that the vibrational theory does."

And although many more scientists are taking the vibrational theory seriously than back in 1996, it remains an extraordinarily polarised debate.

"He's had some peripheral support, but... people don't want to line up behind Luca," Prof Jacob said. "It's scientific suicide."

Columbia University's Richard Axel, whose work on mapping the genes and receptors of our sense of smell garnered the 2004 Nobel prize for physiology, said the kinds of experiments revealed this week would not resolve the debate - only a microscopic look at the receptors in the nose would finally show what is at work.

"Until somebody really sits down and seriously addresses the mechanism and not inferences from the mechanism... it doesn't seem a useful endeavour to use behavioural responses as an argument," he told BBC News.

"Don't get me wrong, I'm not writing off this theory, but I need data and it hasn't been presented."

2 barges damaged in bridge crash, oil spill

2 barges in bridge crash cause oil spill that closes Mississippi River for 16 miles. Investigators not sure whether 1 or 2 barges hit the bridge; only one appears to be leaking oil.

By Janet McCannaughey,?Associated Press / January 27, 2013

The towboat Nature Way Endeavor banks a barge against the western bank of the Mississippi River, Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013. The river was closed to all traffic eight miles north and south of Vicksburg after 1 or 2 barges hit a railroad bridge, causing an oil spill.

A?barge?carrying 80,000 gallons of oil hit a railroad bridge in Vicksburg, Miss., on Sunday, spilling light crude into the Mississippi River and closing the waterway for eight miles in each direction, the Coast Guard said. A second?barge?was damaged.

Investigators did not know how much had spilled, but an oily sheen was reported as far as three miles downriver of Vicksburg after the 1:12 a.m. incident, said Lt. Ryan Gomez of the Coast Guard's office in Memphis, Tenn.

Authorities were still trying to determine the source of the leak, but it appeared to be coming from one or two tanks located at the stern of the first?barge, Gomez said. He said there was no indication that any oil was leaking from the second vessel, and said it was still unclear whether the second?barge?also hit the bridge or was damaged through a collision with the first.

"Investigators are still trying to figure out what happened," he said.

United States Environmental Services, a response-and-remediation company, was working to contain the oil with booms before collecting it and transferring it to one of thebarge's?undamaged tanks, then ultimately to a separate?barge, Gomez said. He could not say how long the river would remain closed in the area. Five northbound and two southbound vessels were waiting to pass, he said.

"It's still considered an active leak," Gomez said. "We don't have an estimate or accurate amount of what was released."

Railroad traffic was allowed to continue after the bridge was found safe for trains, Petty Officer Carlos Vega said.

The?barges?are owned by Third Coast Towing LLC, Gomez said. According to a website listed under that name, the company is located in Corpus Christi, Texas. No one answered the telephone at the company Sunday night.

Both vessels were being pushed by the tugboat Nature's Way Endeavor. The website for Nature's Way Marine LLC of Theodore, Ala., identifies the vessel as a 3,000-horsepower, 90-foot-long boat, making it the largest and highest-powered of the company's five tugs. It was built in 1974 and underwent a complete rebuild in 2011, according to the company.

A company manager referred calls to the Coast Guard command center at Vicksburg.

The last time an oil spill closed a portion of the lower Mississippi River, it was for less than a day last February after an oil?barge?and a construction?barge?collided, spilling less than 10,000 gallons of oil. In 2008, a fuel?barge?collided with a tanker and broke in half, dumping 283,000 gallons of heavy crude into the waterway, and closing the river for six days.

The oil sheen from Sunday's incident was unlikely to pose a threat to the Gulf of Mexico, located 344 river miles south of Vicksburg.

Residents and businesses in Gulf Coast states are still recovering from the April 2010 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, which killed 11 workers and spewed more than 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf.

Wall Street executives fret about talent drain

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - As the titans of Wall Street banks gathered to network, gossip and consider the future of their beleaguered industry in Davos over the past week, one common worry emerged: who is going to take over when we leave?

Some of the most ambitious minds in finance are leaving the industry after years of losses, scandals, bad press - and perhaps most importantly new regulations that have curbed some previously free-wheeling ways.

The issue, executives say, is not pay, but how much scope there is to innovate and build businesses, which is why more bankers and traders are leaving the big Wall Street firms for Silicon Valley, joining private investment partnerships like hedge funds and private equity funds, or going into energy and other industries.

David Boehmer, head of financial services in the Americas for the recruiting firm Heidrick & Struggles, said he hears this message from Wall Street employees looking to leave the industry.

"I get people saying, 'I'm bored and I need to do something about it - this isn't a challenge anymore,'" he said.

The problem is particularly acute for big banks such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc or JPMorgan Chase & Co , several senior bank chief executives, managers and consultants told Reuters in interviews at the World Economic Forum here.

"There is a massive talent drain in our business," said a senior Wall Street executive, who declined to be identified.

BIGGEST CRITICS

For some of Wall Street's harshest critics this is likely to be perceived as good news. Former U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker and other experts have argued for years that innovation has little place in the financial sector, and having more conservative bankers and fewer heavy risk takers running Wall Street will reduce the chances of another blow-up like the financial crisis. It will also help to increase wealth generation in more important parts of the economy, such as manufacturing and software, they argue.

The financial implosion in 2008 was partly triggered by the best and the brightest on Wall Street engineering products that helped inflate a massive housing bubble, and then magnified the losses that resulted. The financial sector globally received trillions of dollars of government support during the worst of the crisis, and new regulations are designed to ensure that bailouts are not necessary in the future.

But many of the biggest global banks have gotten only bigger, making them potentially even more dangerous to the financial system. And having talented executives who understand complicated financial products and know how to control risks will become even more important, executives say.

"It will become more of a problem five or 10 years down the road, but ultimately someone is going to have to manage these beasts," the Wall Street executive said.

It isn't difficult to find examples of the exodus from big banks.

After nearly 15 years in finance - with stints at American International Group Inc , Barclays Capital and PineBridge Investments - Jacques-Philippe Piverger left Wall Street in 2011 to launch a company called Micro Power Design Inc, which makes solar-powered lamps. Piverger's ultimate goal is to get the devices into the hands of poor people in developing countries whose access to electricity is limited.

"Isn't it cool?" he asked as one of the lamps was placed on the bar of the posh Belvedere Hotel in Davos.

Piverger was well-paid in finance but said his career had left him wanting. His startup gives him the ability to "address business and societal and environmental imperatives from under one roof," he said.

Another example is the Twitter-linked tech startup Dataminr, which is staffed by ex-employees from Wall Street firms, including Mark Dimont, who left Morgan Stanley last year to head a business development team there.

Of course, there have been previous waves of departures to hedge funds as bankers and traders have sought to strike out on their own - or to make more money - but this time the departures appear to be broader in nature.

TOLERATING ODDBALLS

The departure of employees may force Wall Street to consider a wider range of people for positions. Heidrick & Struggles' Boehmer gave a presentation to a group of young professionals in Davos about his biggest challenge recruiting for big banks these days: getting executives to think creatively when filling positions.

In the presentation - called "Hiring an oddball" - Boehmer described how hard it is to get bank executives to hire creative and "quirky" leaders who do not "fit in" with the prototypical suited-up Wall Street mould, but who could help revolutionize the industry.

Instead, those quirky types are sought by Silicon Valley, and they may be happier there. Many prefer the laid back atmosphere, not to mention the challenges of building a business, and the promise of lucrative rewards at companies like Google , Facebook and smaller startups, Boehmer said.

"Banks are not getting top-level talent out of universities anymore, so in 10 to 15 years, there could be a big problem when it comes to leadership at the senior level of these firms," Boehmer said. "They're seeing big gaps in talent."

Boehmer said he performed a search for a technology position at a major investment bank, calling on candidates from Silicon Valley who might be lured to New York with mega-paychecks. He was denied by everyone he approached, he said.

On the flip side, Heidrick & Struggles also did a search for a mobile-payments company on the West Coast that was looking for someone with financial expertise but offered just one-quarter of the pay. In that case, "we got tons of applicants," said Boehmer.

Jack Dunn, president and CEO of FTI Consulting, recalled a recent conversation with a friend's son who is about 35 years old and works at a major Wall Street bank.

Despite having a lucrative pay package and senior title, all the son talked about was finding an exit strategy, Dunn said.

"When I was young and didn't know any better, I would have thought it was a dream job," said Dunn, a former investment banker. "It's a problem because we're going to need someone to pick up the pieces, and a lot of the best people are leaving these firms."

Absolute Devotion & Loyalty, That's a Dog | Steve Dale's Pet World

By Steve Dale, today at 10:08 am

Absolute Devotion & Loyalty, That's a Dog
Captain sleeps on his owner's grave every night.

A German Shepherd dog, called Captain, has slept on the grave of his owner every night at 6pm for the last six years. The dog's owner Miguel Guzm?n died in 2006.

According to Internet reports, Captain, the dog, disappeared while the family attended the funeral services. A week later relatives of Guzm?n were visiting the cemetery when they were astounded to find the dog on the owner's grave.

The cemetery director reportedly says that the dog comes around each night at 6 p.m., and has done so for the past six years.

Even if this an Internet hoax (I have not verified that the story is true), we do know dogs in the past have expressed such absolute devotion and loyalty. This is who dogs are.

For those who maintain dogs don't really love - if this isn't love, what is?

Top 10 Good Tech Habits Everyone Should Have

Top 10 Good Tech Habits Everyone Should HaveYou've probably heard people tell you should back up your computer, or you should have more secure passwords. Good tech habits aren't just for geeks?they can save you money, keep your personal information safe, and help you avoid frustration down the road. Here are ten tech habits everyone should have.

Already practice all ten of these habits? Good for you! Go ahead and send this on to your friends that don't, so you can finally avoid all those tech support calls.

10. Regularly Audit Your Privacy Settings on Social Networks

Top 10 Good Tech Habits Everyone Should HaveYou probably already know that social networks like Facebook aren't the poster child for privacy. Unfortunately, the only way to keep your info private?short of quitting those networks altogether?is audit your privacy settings every once in a while. Learn what each of those settings does and tweak them accordingly. You might also check out sites like AdjustYourPrivacy.com to keep up with your privacy settings on all your networks.

9. Know When You're Paying Too Much for a Product

Top 10 Good Tech Habits Everyone Should HaveTechnology isn't cheap, but it doesn't have to be a complete drain on your wallet, either. There are a lot of myths out there that'll cost you money?like buying expensive "gold plated" HDMI cables, or buying new gadgets when refurbished ones are just as good. Check out our list of money-saving tech myths for more, and never pay full price again.

8. Keep Your Desktop and Hard Drive Free of Clutter

Top 10 Good Tech Habits Everyone Should Have If your desktop looks like the picture to the left, then it's time to clean things up a bit. Not only does a cluttered desktop make things harder to find, but if you're on a Mac, it can even slow down your computer. Once you've gotten that messy desktop under control, make it a habit of keeping it organized, and transfer those same ideas to the rest of your files and folders too. The easier it is to find what you're looking for, the less time you'll spend frustrated.

7. Avoid Getting Malware (and Spreading It to Others)

Top 10 Good Tech Habits Everyone Should HaveWe all know viruses are bad, but many of us don't know exactly how they work?which is crucial to avoiding them. Do a little reading on what a virus is and examine the most common virus myths, then install a good, free antivirus program on your computer (and get rid of any existing viruses while you're at it). Also, even if you aren't getting viruses, you could still be spreading them?so watch out for that too. Photo by Justin Marty.

6. Stay Safe on Public Wi-Fi

Top 10 Good Tech Habits Everyone Should HaveWhen you're desperate for Wi-Fi, it can be tempting to connect to that open "linksys" network or the password-free network of a nearby Starbucks. However, doing so opens you up to all sorts of attacks. It sounds a little tin foil hat-y, but you really should be worried about your security. It doesn't take any hacking experience to sniff out someone's Facebook or other credentials, all it takes is a little evil motivation. And don't think just because a network has a password that means it's safe?if other users are on that network (besides you and your family members), they can access your data. Stay safe when you're on public Wi-Fi by turning off sharing and using SSL whenever possible. Photo by ?Florian.

5. Be Smart About Hoaxes, Scams, and Internet Myths

Top 10 Good Tech Habits Everyone Should HaveThe internet is rife with scams, hoaxes, and other misinformation that you probably run into all the time without realizing it. Sometimes it's harmful?like that fake bank email that gives your identity to scammers?while other times it's mostly harmless, like a misattributed quote going viral on Facebook. Either way, though, you should try to avoid falling victim to these hoaxes, and help stop the spread. It's actually very easy to identify these myths online, and just as easy to avoid getting scammed. Just remember: if something seems a little dubious, it probably is.

4. Know What Maintenance Your Computer Needs (and Doesn't Need)

Top 10 Good Tech Habits Everyone Should HaveWe all know computers take a little maintenance to run in tip top shape, but there's no need to hand it over to some quack to get it done?most of it is easy enough to do right at home. Check out our list of maintenance tasks you need to do on Windows PCs and Macs for more info, or if your computer needs a little more help, read our guides to speeding up, cleaning up, and reviving your Windows PC, Mac, iPhone, and Android phone.

3. Use Secure Passwords

Top 10 Good Tech Habits Everyone Should HaveEven if you think you have a secure password, you might be wrong. Yesterday's clever tricks aren't protecting you from today's hackers, and you need to be extra vigilant in this age of constant security breaches. Saving your passwords in a browser is pretty insecure too?so get a good password manager like LastPass and update those passwords for the modern age.

2. Back Up Your Computer

Top 10 Good Tech Habits Everyone Should HaveYou've probably heard people say it a million times, and there's a reason for it. You always think data loss won't happen to you, but it happens to everyone one day, and having a good, up to date backup is the only way to avoid frustration down the road. Plus, setting it up is insanely easy and is something absolutely everyone can do, so you have no excuse: start backing up right now. You'll be glad you did.

1. Search Google Like a Pro

Top 10 Good Tech Habits Everyone Should HaveIf you've ever wondered how us tech geeks know everything that we do, here's our secret: we pretty much just Google everything. With the right Google skills, you can find information about nearly any tech problem you're having, and fix it yourself without anyone else's help. Check out our top 10 tricks for speeding up and beefing up your Google searches to become a search ninja, and avoid frustrating calls to your resident computer tech for advice.

Azarenka beats Li, defends Australian Open title

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? Victoria Azarenka had the bulk of the crowd against her. The fireworks were fizzling out, and when she looked over the net she saw Li Na crashing to the court and almost knocking herself out.

Considering the cascading criticism she'd encountered after her previous win, Azarenka didn't need the focus of the Australian Open final to be on another medical timeout.

So after defending her title with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over the sixth-seeded Li in one of the most unusual finals ever at Melbourne Park, Azarenka understandably dropped her racket and cried tears of relief late Saturday night.

She heaved as she sobbed into a towel beside the court, before regaining her composure to collect the trophy.

"It isn't easy, that's for sure, but I knew what I had to do," the 23-year-old Belarusian said. "I had to stay calm. I had to stay positive. I just had to deal with the things that came onto me."

There were a lot of those things squeezed into the 2-hour, 40-minute match. Li, who was playing her second Australian Open final in three years, twisted her ankle and tumbled to the court in the second and third sets.

The second time was on the point immediately after a 10-minute delay for the Australia Day fireworks ? a familiar fixture in downtown Melbourne on Jan. 26, but not usually coinciding with a final.

Li had been sitting in her chair during the break, while Azarenka jogged and swung her racket around before leaving the court to rub some liniment into her legs to keep warm.

The 30-year-old Chinese player had tumbled to the court after twisting her left ankle and had it taped after falling in the fifth game of the second set. Immediately after the fireworks ceased, and with smoke still in the air, she twisted the ankle again, fell and hit the back of her head on the hard court.

The 2011 French Open champion was treated immediately by a tournament doctor and assessed for a concussion in another medical timeout before resuming the match.

"I think I was a little bit worried when I was falling," Li said, in her humorous, self-deprecating fashion. "Because two seconds I couldn't really see anything. It was totally black.

"So when the physio come, she was like, 'Focus on my finger.' I was laughing. I was thinking, 'This is tennis court, not like hospital.'"

Li's injury was obvious and attracted even more support for her from the 15,000-strong crowd.

Azarenka had generated some bad PR by taking a medical timeout after wasting five match points on her own serve in her semifinal win over American teenager Sloane Stephens on Thursday. She came back after the break and finished off Stephens in the next game, later telling an on-court interviewer that she "almost did the choke of the year."

She was accused of gamesmanship and manipulating the rules to get time to regain her composure against Stephens, but defended herself by saying she actually was having difficulty breathing because of a rib injury that needed to be fixed.

That explanation didn't convince everybody. So when she walked onto Rod Laver Arena on Saturday, there were some people who booed, and others who heckled her or mimicked the distinctive hooting sound she makes when she hits the ball.

"Unfortunately, you have to go through some rough patches to achieve great things," she said. "That's what makes it so special for me. I went through that, and I'm still able to kiss that beautiful trophy."

She didn't hold a grudge.

"I was expecting way worse, to be honest. What can you do? You just have to go out there and try to play tennis in the end of the day," she said. "It's a tennis match, tennis battle, final of the Australian Open. I was there to play that.

"The things what happened in the past, I did the best thing I could to explain, and it was left behind me already."

The match contained plenty of nervy moments and tension, and 16 service breaks ? nine for Li. But it also produced plenty of winners and bravery on big points.

Azarenka will retain the No. 1 ranking she's mostly held since her first Grand Slam win in Melbourne last year.

Li moved into the top five and is heartened by a recent trend of Australian runner-ups winning the French Open. She accomplished that in 2011, as did Ana Ivanovic (2008) and Maria Sharapova (2012).

"I wish I can do the same this year, as well," Li said.

Later Saturday, Bob and Mike Bryan won their record 13th Grand Slam men's doubles title, defeating the Dutch team of Robin Haase and Igor Sijsling 6-3, 6-4.

Sunday's men's final features two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic and U.S. Open winner Andy Murray. Djokovic is seeking to become the first man in the Open era to win three titles in a row in Australia.

Azarenka was planning a night of partying to celebrate her second major title, with her friend Redfoo and the Party Rock crew, and was hopeful of scoring some tickets to the men's final.

She said she needed to let her hair down after a draining two weeks and hoped that by being more open and frank in recent times she was clearing up any misconceptions the public had of her.

"When I came first on the tour I kind of was lost a little bit," he said. "I didn't know how to open up my personality. It's very difficult when you're alone. I was independent since I was, you know, 10 years old. It was a little bit scary and I wouldn't show my personality.

"So the (last) couple of years I learned how to open up to people and to share the moments. I wasn't really good before. I hope I got better. It's your judgment."

Well, that didn't last long. Gmail's handy new Quote Selected Text has received a serious demotion, getting knocked back down to Labs, due to negative user feedback. According to its creators, the addition was causing too much accidental quotation -- and no one wants that, right? If you find yourself missing the feature, you can still enable it with a little help from Labs. No word on plans to move the feature back up to the bigs.
